Stephen Edwin King was born on 21st September 1947 to Donald Edwin King and Ruth Pilsbury King. When he was as toddler his father left the family one night, never to come back. Half of his childhood was spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Stratford, Connecticut but later they came back back to Maine, to appear when his mother's parents.

His mother's relatives provided for them financially.Stephen graduated from Lisbon Falls High Faculty in 1966 and joined University of Maine at Orono on scholarship. He went on to graduating with B.A. in English. It had been here that he wrote his initial novel, The Long Walk, but it was rejected by the publishers. He met his wife Tabitha during the same time when both of them were operating in the university's library. They married in 1971.In the early years of their marriage he wrote short stories for men's magazines. He got his 1st job as English teacher in the fall of 1971 at Hampden Academy.

He used to devote his time for writing in the evenings and during weekends. It was around this time he initial came up with the draft for his book Carrie. But after writing few pages he wasn't convinced with the story line and threw it away. However his wife later found it out from the dustbin and convinced her husband to continue writing. This book gave him his 1st major paperback sale for $400,000 of that [*fr1] went to him as per the contract with this publisher. He then left his teaching job and concentrated utterly in his writing.He moved back to Maine to help make sure of his mother who was ill. He wrote below the pseudo name Richard Bachman but later gave it up as it absolutely was known both were the identical author. Most of his stories are based in the background of Maine. He has been referred to as as the Master of Horror.

His books have been adapted in 33 different languages. He won many awards and recognitions. In 2003 he was awarded Medal for distinguished Contribution to Yank Letters by National Book Foundation.
